Looking back over our own early education, many people cannot remember the process they went through when learning to read. So how can decoding be so important if many of us can not even remember learning it? Or for those children that struggle to decode, why is it so important that they learn to master this skill early in their education? Studies have shown that early decoding skills are directly related to future literacy success (Allington, 2011; Beck & Juel, 2002). Children who develop strong decoding skills in the early years of school are more likely to display higher levels of literacy knowledge and reading skills. Unfortunately the same patter holds true for students who do not develop strong decoding skills. Children who struggle to develop decoding skills in their early years are more likely to struggle with reading throughout their entire educational experience (Squires, 2018). Decoding will not only affect these students in the early years when they are trying to master the skill, it may continue to impact their reading ability throughout their life time. Without intervention, the gap between the strong decoders and the poor decoders grows wider as their time in school continues.
